Community in Bloom

You might ask what this "Community in Bloom" Initiative and why is your Opera Estate Neighbourhood Committee (OENC) strongly promoting it together with the National Parks Board (NParks). "Community in Bloom" initiative is about allowing and encouraging residents to beautify the green spaces along the roadsides in front of their houses. Community gardening is a collective effort by the community to cultivate plants on common green areas to create gardens for all to enjoy. These gardens usually consist of flowers, herbs, spices, or vegetables.

In doing so, we make our estate green, fresh and alway ever blooming. Let’s bring the butterflies back to Opera Estate. Make this a community effort and let us bring back the ‘Kampong Spirit’ to Opera. Besides we Singaporeans are a practical lot and we hope the "Community in Bloom" will enhance the value of our properties. We sure hope it will.

The "Community in Bloom’ Initiative was started in April 2005. Opera Estate has come a long way since. Your Neighbourhood Committee has gone on road shows to encourage residents in many streets including Jalan Bangsawan, Fidelio Street and others to participate in this initiative.

Our pilot project started with a road show in Jalan Bangsawan with about 10 residents in Jalan Bangsawan participating. Residents were given horticultural tips by officers from NParks. The rest is history. It created gardening fever around the vicinity. Just visit Jalan Bangsawan and see for yourself.

In 2005, arising from the efforts put in by our residents, Opera Estate managed to clinch the Silver Award in the Community in Bloom Award 2005. Not bad in the first year we participated.

This year, 2008, Opera Estate has clinched Gold Award in the Community in Bloom Awards 2008.

In addition, this year Opera Estate has been selected to showcase our achievements in the "Community in Bloom" initiative during the ‘Garden Festival’ at Suntec City. The Festival will be held from 25 July 08 to 1 August 08.

Mr Abdul Aziz Amin from 61 Jalan Bangsawan has been very active in his own garden and also has been volunteering his time and effort with the Singapore Orchid Society. He will be managing the Opera Estate booth together with other residents at the Garden Festival. Residents are encouraged to visit the Garden Festival and you will get to see the good work of Mr Aziz, and maybe if you lucky, you may walk away with some interesting prizes.

Lets all make our Estate a Pleasant Place to Live and Play.
